Both of these options are valid however, using a subdomain name like the one I used above is not very user friendly. Every time you want to show this web page to someone, you have to remember this ugly address.
This is why most websites use addresses like www.joaotavora.com . It is much easier to remember and you can simply tell people that your website’s domain name is “www.joaotavora.com”.
And that is exactly the reason why I recommend anyone who wants to start a blog or a website to get a domain name. Somehow it sounds weird but when I write www.thewpthemesong.com , the only thing that comes to my mind is “this blog’s address is…” and not “this is just an ugly address with no meaning”.
What do you need when Purchasing a Domain Name?
Unfortunately, nobody can tell you exactly what you need to buy a domain name online. You see, there are many different extensions (the .com, .net, .org part) that come with the registration of every domain name and they mostly depend on your needs.
I will try to give some advice based on my own experiences however it is up to you to decide what you really need for your blog or website.
Types of Domains-
A Top Level Domain is the main part of most web addresses and tells you which type of organisation or individual is responsible for it. For example: .com, .co.uk and .gov are all Top Level Domains.
A second-level domain is a division of a top-level domain and can be used to specify a subdomain within that top-level domain, such as example.ivyseedbed.com or blog.ivyseedbed.com
A third-level domain is the division of second-level domains. For example, ivy seedbed is a third-level domain that belongs to the top-level domain com.
A fourth-level domain is the division of third-level domains. For example, www is a fourth-level domain which belongs to the second level ivyseedbed.com. It’s important not to confuse fourth-level domains with top-level domains.
A subdomain is the division of a third-level domain. Subdomains are parts of second- or third-level domains, for example blog.ivyseedbed.com would be an actual subdomain in ivyseedbed.com, but another subdomain would be “blogs.ivyseedbed.com”
A domain’s name servers are the computers on the Internet that answer and contain information about a domain and its machine(s). The main Domain Name Server (DNS) for ivyseedbed.com
